“I feel like the old George again.” - George’s return to the British Legion

At 100 years old, George continues to show us that it’s never too late to reconnect with the things that make life meaningful. For George, Cumbernauld Care’s newest resident, that connection was with the British Legion Pensioner’s Group he used to attend regularly.

For 6 months, George was unable to visit and when he arrived at Cumbernauld Care, he expressed how he missed the friends he made there. Knowing how much the meetings meant to him, Wellbeing Lead Kim reached out to the British Legion so that George could reunite with his friends.

The moment he walked back into the hall, cheers of 180 pensioners erupted. Friends shouted his name, welcoming him back, bringing tears to his eyes. That evening, an overwhelming sense of joy carried George through a wonderful time spent with old friends, who greeted him with smiles, meaningful conversations and a few pints of beer!

Since then, George has been going back to the British Legion group every Wednesday, reconnecting with old friends and rediscovering a sense of purpose and belonging.

Here at Each Other Care, we pride ourselves in creating relationships with everyone who chooses to live with us, supporting existing and enabling new links with our community and the people who matter to us. George’s story reminds us of the importance of being there for each other and finding the fun in each day. What a wonderful example of the power of shared friendship and joy and what can happen when we work together to achieve personal goals and aspirations.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Please head to our Facebook page to share your stories on how you’re an integral part of your local community.
