Parkinson Bound: Alex’s Story Reimagined

This National Storytelling Week, we’re celebrating the power of stories to “Reimagine Your World.” At Cumbernauld Care Home, Alex is sharing his own inspiring story through poetry. Parkinson Bound reflects his determination to find purpose, strength and joy in life.

Alex’s poem will be displayed on a plaque in the home as a celebration of his resilience and creativity. It’s a reflection of his journey that captures both the challenges he’s faced and the hope he has for the future. He has reimagined his world by embracing creative expression and finding new ways to keep moving forward.

Alex’s poem. He likes the idea of his story floating in water.

Alex shared what inspired him to write the poem: “Instead of letting Parkinson’s defeat me, I stood up to it and challenged it.” His words reflect his determination to live life to the fullest:

“So being active there’s always hope
And determination to make me cope.”

Kim, Wellbeing Lead at Cumbernauld Care Home, said:

“Alex’s poem is truly special. It comes straight from the heart. Despite the challenges he faces, he approaches every day with such positivity and strength. He’s an incredible man and we’re so proud to have him as part of our Cumbernauld family.”

Alex joined us in September last year and has become a much-loved member of our shared home community. He’s made many wonderful friends and together, they support and cheer each other on every day. Alex loves staying active and getting involved in every part of life at the home and everyone at Cumbernauld Care Home feels incredibly lucky to have him as part of their community.

Alex’s poem shows how sharing personal stories can bring everyone closer together at Cumbernauld Care Home. By opening up about his journey, he has inspired other residents to find their own ways of expressing themselves and has shown the impact creativity can have on supporting one another through life’s challenges.

Conversation and connection are a big part of life at Cumbernauld Care. Whether it’s over a cup of tea or during moments like Alex’s poetry reading, there is always time to listen and support one another.

This National Storytelling Week, we’re sharing resident stories over on Facebook, celebrating the journeys that unite us. Click here to see more.
