Dorothy’s Day Out

The team at Highfield Hall in Haslingden are committed to helping residents feel supported and Dorothy’s story is a lovely reflection of that. Dorothy has dementia and for many years, she preferred the comfort of her room, quietly knitting and enjoying her meals. However, with the gentle encouragement of Unit Manager Sam and Wellbeing Lead Diane, she began to venture out, from dining with others to attending Peter Brown’s organ sessions. Thanks to the team’s encouragement, every Tuesday, when Peter Brown walks through the door, her eyes light up. She takes her seat right next to his and sits contently, taking in the music.

Smiling Dorothy ready for her trip out.

As Dorothy became more comfortable around the home, the team felt she might feel at ease enough to visit the local pub. Although she was hesitant at first, she soon relaxed, surrounded by friends, enjoying her meal and the atmosphere. It was a touching moment for the team, seeing Dorothy embrace the joy of community for the first time in over four years.

Discussing the heartfelt moment, Wellbeing Lead Diane said:

“It’s been incredible to see her come out of her shell. Taking those little steps has meant so much.”

This journey reflects Each Other Care’s values of creating genuine relationships and providing an environment where we are there for one another. At Highfield Hall, our team truly understands Dorothy and she has come to know and trust them. The familiar faces and patient support have made all the difference, giving Dorothy a chance to reconnect with the world around her.

Now, we’re wondering, where shall we go next?
